About the Workshop
Every great scene needs to go somewhere. We’ve all seen performances that start with an incredible spark, only to fizzle out halfway through because the players ran out of ideas or pushed the conflict to an extreme too quickly. True narrative momentum isn’t about shouting louder or making crazier choices—it’s about structural pacing.
In this final, explosive 2-hour masterclass of our summer series, instructor Mike Devine teaches you the mechanics of sustainable escalation. You will discover how to identify the core emotional or comedic engine of a scene, hook onto it, and systematically turn up the heat degree by degree without burning out your characters or your audience.
What You’ll Learn & Practice:
Recognizing the Spark: How to instantly spot the micro-moments, subtle lines, or physical choices that contain the true "game" or underlying conflict of the scene.
The Ladder of Escalation: Master the art of the slow burn. Learn how to raise the stakes logically and incrementally, making each beat a natural consequence of the last.
Sustainable Heightening: Discover techniques to expand the world, philosophy, or emotional depth of your character to keep a long scene dynamic and unpredictable.
Holding the Peak: How to confidently navigate a high-stakes climax without panicking, finding satisfying button moments or structural resolutions that leave a lasting impact.
Who Is This For?
This workshop is essential for long-form improvisers who want to master scenic endurance and narrative pacing, as well as dramatic and comedic actors looking to bring a sharper sense of structural control, timing, and momentum to their text work.
Space is Strictly Limited: To ensure every single participant gets dedicated stage time, direct coaching, and personalized feedback, enrollment for this session is capped.
